In a stark warning, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan highlighted the global repercussions of the ongoing conflict in Iran, emphasizing that no nation is immune to the ripple effects of crises occurring in other parts of the world. Speaking in Ankara after a Cabinet meeting, Erdoğan outlined how the economic and political tremors from the Iran war are being felt across continents, manifesting as inflation spikes, supply chain disruptions, and instability in energy markets.
Erdoğan remarked on the deep interconnectedness brought on by globalization and economic interdependence, suggesting that regional disputes now have the potential to impact the entire globe. He vividly illustrated this by stating, “When a country in the Middle East sneezes today, a country in Latin America or Asia can easily catch a cold.” This comment came in the wake of attacks against Iran on February 28, which have led to a complex crisis with global implications. He cited continued fuel price volatility, rising inflation, ongoing supply chain issues, and bottlenecks in the Strait of Hormuz as indicators of escalating global vulnerabilities.
The Turkish president expressed concern over the unpredictability of the economic devastation caused by these developments, attributing part of the problem to what he described as a speculative and manipulative market system that benefits a select few. Erdoğan criticized “a handful of wild capitalists” who, in his view, are profiting at the expense of billions worldwide, exacerbating inequalities as middle- and lower-income families grapple with diminishing purchasing power and increased living costs.
Erdoğan also drew attention to the domestic impact, condemning excessive price hikes in Türkiye’s markets. Despite the country’s relatively low input costs, especially in energy, he argued that some pricing behaviors were unjustifiable. He vowed to continue governmental inspections and measures against such opportunistic practices, urging businesses to participate in efforts to maintain market stability and protect consumers.
In addition to economic concerns, Erdoğan strongly condemned Israel’s attacks on the Global Sumud Flotilla, labeling them as “piracy” and “banditry.” He reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to justice and solidarity with the Palestinian people, underscoring that these aggressive actions would not deter the international community’s resolve. The flotilla, carrying citizens from 40 countries, was characterized by Erdoğan as a “voyage of hope” and a symbol of ongoing efforts to support Palestinian rights.
