Iran’s President Pezeshkian Pledges UN Defense of National Stance

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has pledged to assertively defend his country’s positions on the international stage as he prepares to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Speaking just before his departure on Tuesday, Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s commitment to presenting its stance with determination and safeguarding the rights and interests of its citizens.

Joining the diplomatic effort, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday to lead Tehran’s delegation at the annual UN gathering. He engaged in a phone discussion with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, focusing on issues pertinent to the General Assembly.

Araghchi highlighted that Iran’s primary goal at the UN is to underscore what it considers the legitimacy and rightful interests of the Iranian people. During the session, he is also expected to engage in meetings with various foreign ministers and officials from other participating nations.

The Iranian delegation’s participation comes amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial corridor for global oil and gas shipments. Iran has signaled through Qatar its conditions for reopening the strategic waterway, which has been a focal point of contention with the United States, which has imposed measures targeting Iranian ports.
