However, the initiative has been met with skepticism from Turkish Cypriot authorities, who question the EU’s ability to remain neutral in the dispute due to the Republic of Cyprus’s EU membership.
Turkish Cypriot leaders have expressed concerns over the EU’s impartiality, arguing that the bloc’s involvement is compromised. They have also voiced criticism over the EU’s decision to appoint a special envoy for Cyprus without consulting them. This step, they believe, undermines their position and highlights a lack of engagement with the Turkish Cypriot side.
In response, the European Commission has stated that its special representative’s role will focus on building trust between the two communities and supporting the resumption of negotiations under the UN’s guidance. EU officials have reiterated their dedication to supporting efforts aimed at achieving a lasting resolution to the longstanding conflict.
The Cyprus issue has been unresolved for decades, with peace talks reaching an impasse since 2017. Turkish Cypriot leaders maintain that any future negotiations must acknowledge their sovereign equality and equal international status before formal dialogues can proceed.
