The US-brokered ceasefire proposal includes several conditions: Hamas would need to surrender its weapons and dismantle its tunnel network. In turn, there would be a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces, the establishment of a Palestinian technocratic administration, deployment of an international security force, and reconstruction efforts in Gaza. However, this framework has been rejected by Netanyahu as Israel remains cautious about any potential resurgence of Hamas’ military capabilities if troops are withdrawn prematurely.
Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains dire, with recent Israeli airstrikes reportedly resulting in the deaths of at least 17 people, including children. In a separate incident, Palestinians held a mass funeral after rescue teams recovered over 100 bodies from the site of a significant Israeli airstrike in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood, which occurred in November 2023. Recovery operations are ongoing, as many victims are still feared to be trapped under the rubble.
The conflict traces back to October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.
