In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent assertion that the United States should control Greenland, Finnish leaders have expressed their opposition, emphasizing the importance of respecting existing territorial boundaries. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen have both dismissed Trump’s renewed claims, underscoring that any decisions regarding Greenland fall under the jurisdiction of Denmark and Greenland.
Following Trump’s comments at the NATO summit, Stubb highlighted that the matter of Greenland’s sovereignty remains a domestic issue for Denmark and Greenland alone. Echoing this sentiment, Valtonen reaffirmed Finland’s commitment to supporting Denmark’s territorial integrity. She emphasized that discussions on Arctic security should be addressed through current defense collaborations rather than through territorial acquisition.
Valtonen pointed out that Denmark and the United States are already engaged in talks concerning defense cooperation, a move that aligns with NATO’s broader efforts to bolster security throughout the Arctic region. This approach underscores the importance of collaboration and existing alliances in maintaining regional stability without resorting to contentious territorial claims.
Greenland, recognized as a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, remains at the center of ongoing discussions about Arctic sovereignty and security. Trump’s remarks have sparked renewed debate among European allies, highlighting concerns over sovereignty and the strategic importance of the Arctic region.
