Greek Leader Urges NATO Caution During Talks on Turkish Fighter Jets

As discussions unfold regarding the potential resumption of F-35 fighter jet sales to Türkiye by the United States, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has refrained from making direct comments on the matter. He highlighted the importance of NATO allies remaining attuned to regional security concerns, particularly in light of ongoing tensions. Mitsotakis emphasized the need for NATO to consider the security needs of all its member states, given the longstanding disputes that persist in the region.

Speaking ahead of an upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, the Greek Prime Minister expressed his country’s commitment to fostering improved relations with Türkiye. He advocated for dialogue and cooperation between the two neighbors, which have often found themselves at odds over various issues. Despite these efforts, the maritime boundaries and territorial disputes in the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean continue to be contentious points of disagreement between the two nations.

These remarks from Mitsotakis follow indications from US President Donald Trump that Washington might be contemplating lifting restrictions on defense cooperation with Türkiye. This includes the potential sale of F-35 fighter jets and the easing of CAATSA sanctions, which have been in place due to previous tensions and disagreements.

While diplomatic efforts have been made to mend ties between Greece and Türkiye, deep-seated issues remain unresolved. The territorial and maritime disputes in particular continue to strain relations between the two NATO allies, underscoring the complex dynamics at play within the alliance.
