Spotify Labels AI Artists, Excludes Them From Recommendations

Starting in September, Spotify will implement new strategies to distinguish AI-generated artists and curtail their prominence on the platform. These AI-created artist profiles will be marked with an “AI persona” label visible on both artist profiles and track listings. This initiative is part of Spotify’s efforts to help users differentiate between authentic musicians and artificial identities, thereby safeguarding real artists from losing visibility to AI-generated music.

Furthermore, the company announced that AI personas will be automatically excluded from personalized recommendations. Spotify aims to maintain transparency and clarity in an era where generative AI is becoming increasingly prevalent in the music industry. The platform will allow artists to voluntarily disclose AI-generated identities but will also employ human reviewers alongside AI-driven tools to detect undisclosed AI personas.

The decision comes amid a surge in AI-generated music, highlighting the challenges faced by streaming services. Previously, Spotify revealed it had removed 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month span, underscoring the influx of artificial and low-quality content invading music platforms.

As generative AI continues to shape the music landscape, Spotify emphasizes the importance of transparency. Listeners are becoming more interested in knowing whether the artist behind a track is a real person or an AI-generated entity. By introducing these measures, Spotify aims to address these concerns while supporting genuine musicians in retaining their audience and exposure.
