Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has achieved a historic milestone as her administration becomes the longest-serving in the Italian Republic’s history, a feat that drew congratulations from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Marking the occasion, Erdoğan highlighted the ongoing cooperation and solidarity between Türkiye and Italy, expressing optimism for even deeper ties in the future.
Meloni’s government reached 1,413 consecutive days in office, surpassing the previous record of 1,412 days set by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s second term from 2001 to 2005. Since assuming office in October 2022, Meloni has not only become Italy’s first female prime minister but has also fostered a close relationship with Erdoğan. The two leaders have been in regular contact to discuss bilateral and regional matters.
The relationship between Türkiye and Italy has seen significant growth, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, defence, energy, and migration. Both countries have been actively coordinating on regional issues, including the situations in Libya and Ukraine. This strategic partnership was further solidified during the fourth Türkiye-Italy Intergovernmental Summit in Rome in April 2025, where numerous agreements were signed to enhance their economic and strategic collaboration.
Most recently, Erdoğan and Meloni met during the NATO summit in Ankara in July, where they reaffirmed their commitment to boost trade, mutual investment, and cooperation in defence and other key sectors. This ongoing dialogue underscores the strong bilateral relations that have developed between the two nations under their leadership.
