Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has raised concerns about the impact of social media algorithms, which he referred to as “algorithm fascism,” warning that they increasingly blur the lines between truth and misinformation. Speaking at the Second Communication Council in Ankara, Erdoğan highlighted how digital platforms are shaping public perception, complicating the ability of individuals to differentiate between facts and interpretations.
He pointed out that while advancements in artificial intelligence and communication technologies have revolutionized information sharing, they have also escalated the spread of disinformation. Erdoğan expressed concern that social media has the power to influence public thinking, alter the interpretation of events, and even reshape historical narratives, all of which could pose threats to cultural values and social cohesion.
The president mentioned that the Communication Council is designed to steer Türkiye’s future communication strategy by bringing together various stakeholders, including government officials, academics, media representatives, and civil society experts. The aim of the event is to enhance public communication policies that align with the country’s long-term vision.
In addition to discussing social media’s influence, Erdoğan also addressed the ongoing investigation into the Ahbap charity. He affirmed that the legal process is underway to hold accountable those accused of exploiting public trust in the aftermath of the 2023 earthquakes.
