Việt Nam and Denmark Establish Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Enhanced Cooperation

Việt Nam and Denmark have decided to upgrade their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking a significant step forward in their cooperation across various sectors. This announcement came after talks between Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen, as both nations prepare to celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2026.

The partnership aims to strengthen political ties and deepen collaboration in trade, investment, renewable energy, technology, and sustainable development. Denmark is now the second European Union member state to establish such a partnership with Việt Nam. During discussions, both leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing the EU–Việt Nam Free Trade Agreement, improving market access, and encouraging active participation in international supply chains.

Denmark expressed its intent to expand investments in Việt Nam, particularly in high technology and environmentally friendly industries. Vietnamese leader Tô Lâm acknowledged the contributions of significant Danish companies and called for stronger investment promotion to translate commitments into practical initiatives. The two countries also agreed to foster cooperation among government agencies, businesses, and local communities.

Renewable energy and the green transition are set to be major priorities under this new partnership. Denmark has pledged to share its expertise and technology with Việt Nam to support its transition to cleaner energy and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Tô Lâm sought Danish support in mobilizing green finance and developing large-scale renewable energy projects, such as offshore wind power.

Technological collaboration will also be a key focus, with both governments agreeing to enhance cooperation in science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation. They aim to encourage partnerships among universities, research institutes, and businesses, while promoting skills development and the training of highly qualified professionals.

On the regional and international stage, Tô Lâm and Frederiksen reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and international law, emphasizing the importance of enhanced relations between the European Union and ASEAN. Việt Nam expressed its readiness to facilitate cooperation between Denmark and ASEAN.

The leaders concluded their meeting by instructing relevant ministries and agencies to implement the commitments outlined in the new partnership framework. They also witnessed the exchange of cooperation documents, solidifying their strategic vision for future collaboration. Prime Minister Frederiksen accepted an invitation to visit Việt Nam, underscoring the commitment of both nations to achieving tangible results from their upgraded partnership.
