Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has cautioned Greece against actions that could elevate regional tensions, expressing particular concern over Athens’ enhanced defense collaboration with Israel. Fidan underscored Türkiye’s desire for amicable relations with Greece, yet highlighted the importance of considering Türkiye’s security apprehensions.
Fidan’s remarks come amid ongoing unresolved disputes between Greece and Türkiye over maritime boundaries, territorial waters, and the military status of Aegean islands. These islands, according to Türkiye, should adhere to demilitarization agreements, a stance that contrasts with Greece’s position. Athens maintains that its defense initiatives are necessary for safeguarding its sovereignty and addressing security concerns.
In addition to addressing Greek-Israeli military ties, Fidan criticized Israel’s military actions in Syria. He described these actions as potentially destabilizing for Syria, advocating for diplomatic approaches to resolve regional disputes. Türkiye, he noted, supports Syria’s initiatives to reestablish security, governance, and economic progress.
Fidan also touched upon regional security collaboration between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. He revealed ongoing efforts to structure this emerging partnership and explore avenues for expanding cooperative measures. The Turkish foreign minister emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to regional coordination on security issues, including developments in Yemen and threats faced by Saudi Arabia, while advocating for diplomatic cooperation to ensure regional stability.
