Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has committed to ensuring economic stability and safeguarding investors amid an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the nation’s capital markets. The investigation has already led to several investment funds being closed to trading by the Capital Markets Board, with some funds facing liquidation as a protective measure for investors.
In response to these developments, Erdoğan announced the formation of a comprehensive oversight board, chaired by the vice president, to manage the liquidation of affected funds. He also tasked the State Supervisory Council with assisting in the oversight process to ensure transparency and accountability. The government is determined to hold those responsible for any malpractice accountable, emphasizing the importance of not allowing the investigation to destabilize Türkiye’s broader financial system.
Thus far, the investigation has resulted in the arrest of five individuals suspected of engaging in fraudulent activities, money laundering, and violations of capital markets laws. Prosecutors are diligently examining these allegations to determine the full extent of the irregularities within the segment of the fund market currently under scrutiny.
Erdoğan reassured that the issues identified are confined to a particular segment of the market, and corrective measures are being implemented to safeguard financial stability. This move aims to restore confidence among investors and uphold the integrity of Türkiye’s financial markets.
