Heavy rainfall is intensifying in Istanbul, significantly increasing the risk of flooding and disruptions to transportation. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Center has forecast that rain will strengthen around 11 a.m. after initial showers affected parts of the city earlier in the morning. The precipitation is expected to continue throughout the afternoon, tapering off by around 4 p.m.
Accompanying the rainfall, temperatures have dropped sharply, with morning readings around 14°C, remaining below seasonal averages throughout the day. The weather pattern is influenced by a combination of cold air aloft and warm, moisture-laden air near the surface, creating conditions ripe for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong showers.
Meteorological authorities have issued warnings for Istanbul and several provinces in the Marmara and western Black Sea regions. Residents have been cautioned about potential sudden flooding, strong winds, lightning, and possible disruptions to transport services.
Improvement in weather conditions is expected from Thursday onwards, with a rise in temperatures to about 21°C and no significant rainfall in the forecast.
