Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are commemorating the 52nd anniversary of the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation with official ceremonies in Lefkoşa (Nicosia). A Turkish delegation led by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz is participating in the ceremonies, underscoring Türkiye’s continued involvement in the region.
As part of the anniversary activities, Türkiye has sent naval vessels for public visits, highlighting its maritime presence. Additionally, a new maritime traffic monitoring center is set to be inaugurated in Famagusta, aimed at enhancing cooperation and security in the Eastern Mediterranean. These measures come at a time when negotiations over the future of Cyprus remain at a standstill, with little progress in sight.
The Turkish Cypriot leadership continues to push for a two-state solution, emphasizing the principle of sovereign equality. They express frustration over the lack of international recognition for the TRNC, pointing to what they see as the Greek Cypriot authorities’ role in heightening regional tensions through new military alliances.
Amid these developments, Turkish Cypriot officials stress the importance of Türkiye’s role as a guarantor state, arguing that its presence is vital for maintaining security on the island.
