Turkey Showcases Disaster Health Skills at WHO Conference

Türkiye is stepping up its efforts to share its disaster health management expertise with the global community, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding lives during major emergencies. At the World Health Organization (WHO) Ministerial Conference held in Istanbul, Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu underscored the need for scientific collaboration and international solidarity to tackle the global challenge of earthquakes. The conference gathered representatives from about 40 countries to enhance disaster preparedness and strengthen healthcare systems against earthquakes and other emergencies.

Memişoğlu pointed to Türkiye’s extensive experience in disaster response, particularly following the devastating earthquakes in February 2023. During this crisis, the nation deployed over 138,000 healthcare personnel, emergency responders, and support staff. Additionally, Türkiye conducted one of its largest medical evacuation operations, transporting more than 51,000 patients to hospitals outside the affected areas while quickly establishing field hospitals and emergency medical facilities.

In his address, Memişoğlu highlighted the significant advancements Türkiye has made in its healthcare infrastructure. The country has invested in resilient hospitals, emergency medical services, digital health systems, air ambulance operations, and National Medical Rescue Teams (UMKE). He also introduced the domestically developed GÖKBEY ambulance helicopter, capable of providing intensive care in challenging terrains during disasters.

Looking ahead, Türkiye is enhancing its disaster preparedness, especially in anticipation of a potential major earthquake in the Marmara region. The nation has introduced a comprehensive earthquake preparedness model and developed what it claims to be the world’s first Public Health Services in Earthquakes Guide. This guide includes detailed response plans for Istanbul and other high-risk areas, aiming to improve readiness and response efficiency.

Memişoğlu reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to aiding disaster-stricken countries by sharing its expertise, trained personnel, and emergency response capabilities. He stressed that large-scale disasters are challenges no single nation can face alone, underscoring the vital role of international cooperation in disaster management.
